People in the Bay Area have been some of the strongest adopters of dating apps over the years and it peaked during the pandemic when things shut down, places closed early, work friendships disintegrated, people stopped going to work and the inertia to get off the couch and leave the apartment was at an all-time high.
Dating apps have gotten bad press lately (and rightfully so) but they are still one of the most common ways people meet their partners and spouses and no, it’s not just men who are 6 feet tall or rich, nor is it just young attractive women who are having success. Lots of folks are meeting on apps still but the amount is underreported due to stigma around dating apps, even in 2026.
Online Dating Photos Mistakes, Myths
One of the common mistakes people make on dating apps is with their photos. Thanks to the rise of photo-editing tools, AI, better cameras and tech-savvy audiences, people have tried to get an edge with perfect photos on dating apps to separate themselves from the competition.
Others have (un)intentionally used old photos that no longer look like themselves. Lack of going out, reduction in friends and busier lifestyles has resulted in fewer photos being taken and people using photos that are 3-5 and even 10 years old. While this tactic may increase first dates, it has often led to a decrease in second dates. There is nothing worse than having someone leave a date early because they felt deceived.
Many folks overthink dating photos. Dating profile photos are not for yourself, they are for the people you are trying to attract. It’s something that might seen counterintuitive, but professional photos can backfire. They suggest someone might be trying too hard, photos might be photoshopped, person has no friends, the person is narcissistic, has no hobbies or has a boring lifestyle.
There is a fine line between obtaining flatter photos and getting photos that are fun, approachable, taken in the moment and appear effortless but if you compare your profile to those you might see on dating apps, you may think otherwise.

Many online dating photographers are portrait photographers who re-purpose their photos for dating apps. It’s an easy way to expand their target audiences for a style of photography that has increased in demand over the last decade.
The style and technique for dating photos is materially different in my opinion, but most photographers take photos for you and don’t consider the end user/audience: people on dating apps you are trying to attract.
Quite a number of them use the same locations over and over again making it obvious who took the photos. Some may use generic backgrounds that don’t offer any value and make it harder for others to find something to comment on.
Some may even take photos that are blurred out in the background removing talking points, raising doubt that a friend took them and more likely someone is hired or even suggesting you planned the photo rather than taking it in the moment.
Most photographers use a big dslr or mirrorless camera that draw attention to folks in public places which can feel awkward and make it hard to get good photos.
Natural, Candid Dating Photos San Francisco Bay Area
If you have spent any time reading my newsletter, I have spent the last 12 years working remotely (cafes, bars, parks, public spaces), taking photos of clients in (restaurants, bars, galas, hobbies) and exploring the Bay Area inside out.
This accumulated knowledge, combined with my analytical mindset has allowed me to take all the effort and planning out for clients so they can relax and be themselves. Half the time, clients are not aware I am taking photos as the sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like hanging out with a friend or even a casual interview where folks pick my brain (and vice-versa).
No other online dating photographer spends time in spaces like me. No other photographer asks to see your existing photos (some may not need as many photos and in some cases, new photos may not be needed at all). I usually take photos with my phone to give a more natural, organic feel but also draw less attention to use when shooting at bars, cafes, events and out in public.
My goal is not to take perfect photos nor is it to get more likes or matches, but rather increase quality matches and dates as well as reduce false positives on dating apps with people who are incompatible based on lifestyle, vibe, interests, and relationship goals. In some cases, fewer (better) matches can be the goal as fatigue can make it hard to assess who to prioritize, what red flags to identify and how to cutoff timewasters.
Good Dating Photos For Hinge, Bumble, Men, Women
Good dating photos can be hard to come by, even if you have friends. Friends often lack the lens to view you for the first time or through a neutral observer (like someone on dating apps would).
It may be tough to focus and be relaxed around friends if they are taking photos. Similarly, photos should capture you, your vibe, style, energy, interests and more but that can be tricky if your friend is not good at taking photos which can lead to long shoots, frustration with photos and becoming exhausted posing all day.
Do You Need Professional Dating Photos?
You don’t need professional dating photos to have success with online dating but it can certainly help but only if you understand the types of photos that invite conversation, show vulnerability, give insight into lifestyle and focus on personality rather than showcase an empty portrait, against a generic neutral wall without any context.
Some people are capable of getting photos on their own but want to obtain them faster as getting good photos can take months if not years given things like lighting, occasions to take photos, knowing what makes a for a good photos, how to pose, what to wear and more. With me, you are not just hiring someone to take photos, I review outfits, analyze existing photos and in many cases will review dating app choices, settings and profiles to make sure photos will help.
Photos are important but they are not everything. Plenty of people with good photos struggle because they are unaware how filters work, don’t understand the algorithms, get bad advice from reddit posts and social media, try standardized approaches without considering individuals or may not understand best practices with timing, strategy, swiping and messaging.
