Free Public Work Spaces San Francisco

Expensify Free Coworking Space (CLOSED)

This was a legendary coworking space. In the early days, you could get free espresso drinks, free drinks (cocktails, wine & beer) and for the early adopters, free lunch as well on certain days.

Over time, the freebies were rolled back including free snacks and later on account registration but that the downfall quickly escalated when a blogger/journalist tweeted about this and it ruined it for everyone.

I am not saying it would still be around if it were not for that guy but there is a reason why awesome places are gate kept so people can enjoy them without fear of being discovered and ruined by the masses.

Southeast Community Center, Indian Basin

This space has seating indoors and outdoors and has incredible views on clear days. This is one of the newer spaces in the city and has relatively easy parking nearby.

Open 7-7, M-F.

Reviews, photos here.

Upstairs Westfield Mall

I am not sure what the setup is like there but at one point it featured tables, a piano and a beautiful atrium for lighting. Don’t use the tables downstairs as those are mainly for diners but use discretion.

1-4 Embarcadero Center

There are lots of nooks in/around the Embarcadero Center including the land bridges (can get windy) and areas around the second floors (tables and chairs) good for working, eating or having a quick meeting.

Capital One Cafe Coworking Space

Capital One Cafe offers 3 floors of coworking spaces. Bottom features counches and some tables, main floor features communal tables and bar seating type arrangements facing the street and the mezzanine is filled with small tables.

There are a couple of private booths upstairs but reservation is required. This is a popular place that fills up asap, especially during conferences. Discount on Verve coffee for Capital One cardholders.

San Francisco Public Libraries

The main library gets a lot of attention but the other libraries are great for working from. There are usually very quiet, feature security, have strong wifi and easier to get to.

UCSF Library (Closed to public, re-opening August 2025?)

https://www.library.ucsf.edu/timeline-for-reopening-spaces-and-in-person-services/

Check back for updates but this was the best free space to work from but closed during COVID/construction.

de Young Museum Cafe

Limited hours and although free, it’s expected you do buy something there. See laptop etiquette above.

SFMOMA 2nd Floor

Limited hours and although free, it’s expected you do buy something there if using the tables from the cafe there. See laptop etiquette above.

Pro-tip: monitor free days to access the open courtyard on the 3rd floor with more space.

Spark Social, Mission Bay

Lots of tables all over the place.
