Update March 18, 2026: It appears that the Buffalo Milk Soft Serve has been dwindling in production after changes in ownership and will no longer be made.
Instead, the soft serve will be made with Jersey Cows which is still great but not the same as this magical, limited edition version that people all over the world have come to love. Other locations have switched to soft serve made from Strauss (noted below) which is also amazing but again, not Double 8 Buffalo soft serve.
Whatever allotment is left, if any, I hope you enjoyed it. I knew the offering was on the rocks when I wrote this last September, after I contacted several folks in the industry, but hoped for the best and wanted my supporters to get one last cup or cone. I noticed a few suppliers had made the switch already when I wrote this in 2025, which caught my attention as one simply does not willingly stop serving this majestic treat.

The best soft serve in all the San Francisco Bay Area is incredibly hard to find, and that’s because it’s made with buffalo milk. Most soft serve on the market is made with cow milk. Buffalo milk is fattier and richer in flavor. It’s the most decadent treat you can find.
It’s so insanely delicious that even people who are lactose intolerant will gladly suffer the consequences and immediate aftermath and make an exception for this dairy delight.
The number of water buffalo dairies is limited, and it’s hard to tell how many exist today. If you grew up in Marin or Sonoma or spent significant time there, chances are you may have tried one from none other than Double 8 Dairy in Valley Ford (Sonoma County).
At one point, it supplied restaurants like French Laundry, Sushi Ran, with their gelato and even Four Barrel Coffee used it in their affogatos. They even had their own packaged pints available for retail purchase.
I first recommended the buffalo milk soft serve on Eddie’s List as the weekly recommendation back in 2023, and I received numerous notes and emails from readers thanking me for this incredible find.
