SFMTA To Install Traffic Calming Devices Throughout San Francisco
SFMTA has heard your complaints. In a blog post from earlier today, it has identified 141 locations residents have voiced concerns over through their traffic calming program. It’s a program I have urged people to act on over the years by filing reports, gathering signatures from neighbors, taking photos and reaching out to local supervisors.
San Francisco Traffic Calming Program
The program has been around since 2001 and largely has been used to collect data about problem areas throughout the city. Types of complaints I have personally submitted to the program include vehicles running stop signs and vehicles speeding on certain stretches of streets.
SFMTA Traffic Calming Program Suspension
Back in June 2025, SFMTA announced it would be pausing the program starting July 1, 2025 due to rising costs, and record demand (per KQED article). According to the SF Chronicle, it had received about 300 resident proposals.
SFMTA Street Calming Device Timeline
Installation starts in hours (tomorrow to be exact) and will continue through the fall and winter (February). Each project will take no more than 2 days per estimates. and residents who are impacted should have been notified via post card in the mail.
Types Of Street Calming Devices In San Francisco
The three types will be speed humps, speed cushions (like humps but with carve outs for emergency vehicles), speed tables (elevated areas, mostly intersections), traffic circles and median islands.
It appears that the current efforts will focus on the first three items I mentioned (those seem to be the easiest to implement).
