Weekly Recommendation
This week’s recommendation is to check out a few clips from the late Eddie Palmieri, born in Spanish Harlem, raised in the Bronx, who passed away on Wednesday. He was the first Latino to win a Grammy, he pounded the piano so hard that he was often referred to as the piano breaker. His performances were epic. His infectious music drew huge crowds, even if they were not salsa or Latin Jazz fans - he was that good.
It’s one thing to be a pioneer in one’s field, it’s another to be one of the best to ever do it, but it speaks volumes to lead by example and be a mentor and inspiration to a younger generation, which he was known to be for so many young musicians. Two clips to give a sense of range from passion & intensity to precision & grace from el maestro: live performance w/ band (1989?) & NPR Tiny Desk (2016).
