If you are like most people, you are likely tried of dating apps. Low-effort, ghosting, lies, height-fishing, old photos and travel mode have made online dating awful.
This is enough to turn away more people but if you are a guy, look no further than the male to female ratios in San Jose on dating apps! Huzzah! Dating in San Jose as a woman is not much better given the odds are good but the goods are odd.
As a photographer and dating coach for men & women, I spend a lot of time navigating the Bay Area, looking for fun places to take photos, identifying great spots for first dates, and helping individuals expand their hobbies & interests, finding bars/restaurants to meet singles and identifying events for people to meet men and women.

Below are some of my recommendations to meet singles whether you are new in town and don’t know many people, are over 40, don’t drink/hate bars, are a little introverted or are recently single.

Singles Events San Jose, Speed Dating Events Santa Clara
I am not a big fan of speed dating events nor singles events, especially in San Jose/Clara areas as many are a waste of time, but occasionally there are some good ones. I will occasionally post some in my weekly newsletter but that is pretty rare given that speed dating in San Jose can feel awkward and leave people feeling defeated and hopeless as many of the people you swiped left on show up at these events.
Be sure to look up venues, organizers etc on Yelp/Google. Don’t rely on self-reported reviews on own sites, ignore reviews from friends, partners, etc. Avoid no-name organizers on Eventbrite, Tik-Tok, DM’s on Instagram and recruiting pitches from people on Facebook groups.
San Jose Matchmakers, Santa Clara Matchmaking Services
In my line of work, I run across many matchmakers. Some try to hire me for their clients, many bother me for referrals and some try to get me to write about them. I was interviewed in the New York Times a while back for an article about matchmaking.
Don’t make the mistake of hiring a matchmaker before you read this guide. This free guide will help you ask better questions, clarify important requirements and protect you in case you don’t know what to ask or look out for.
San Jose matchmakers can be super hit or miss. They are professional salespeople, some prey on vulnerable/desperate individuals, make vague claims and rush you to sign contracts before you clarify details, specify deal-breakers and what not.
Many services scour profiles on dating apps, thus duplicating efforts you may have already exhausted or go on dates with people you left-swiped. Some may match you with people far away, are still married or living with their exes, don’t screen for criminal backgrounds and cannot guarantee they will be ready to date, settle down, want kids or have a high EQ.
Read their reviews, see who left them (friends, business partners or people who attended a free event or was matched for free i.e. didn’t pay to retain services).
Dating Apps In San Jose, South Bay; Online Dating As A Man, Woman
Dating apps can be brutal and in some cases demoralizing, and not just for men. Yes, men outnumber women on dating apps by a large margin but given gender ratios in Man Jose and introverted and socially awkward types of the area, way too many guys rely on dating apps here.
As gener ration get worse, guys get more desperate. They pay for boosts, swipe right on everyone (volume approach), use more AI to write messages and craft profiles and do more awful things that make it worse for women (more unmatching, more ghosting and more people who lie about themselves).
I am not saying dating apps are worthless for folks in San Jose and surrounding areas, but you do need self-awareness, good strategy, solid profile, good hobbies/lifestyle choices, and more importantly, the time and effort needed for such an endeavor. Too many folks are too busy to date, underestimate the commitment needed to date and meet others.
