Thanks to WFH trends, companies scaling back on cafeterias and catered lunches, people are looking for good deals on lunch options. When timing is limited or ability to cook for oneself is non-existent, this guide is for you. One of my favorite deals was a burger (or chicken sandwhich combo) and a crat beer pint for $10. It was an amazing deal, but unfortunately that went under around the time of the pandemic.

While New York and Chicago get all the praise for pizza, as they should, the Bay Area is having a pizza moment right now with lots of incredible places surfacing offering a range of styles from Detroit style, tavern, Neopolitan and New York.

One of my favorite places for pizza is OG Roberta’s in Bushwick, but I am agnostic when it comes to pizza styles so you will see a range below of places across the Bay Area. Sadly one of my favorite pizzas Del Popolo is closing tomorrow (May 8)

For a long time, the Bay Area put up with mediocre pizza from corporate & private equity owned places and lacked crowds (and turnover) to make slices worth it but these days, as prices for food has skyrockted, people are resorting to takeout, grab & go and quick bites more than ever.

Similarly, famous institutions have launched spin-outs creating their own businesses or opened new locations across the Bay Area to harness the momentum that their flagship locations have created.

French Fries & Martinis

Martinis and fries go together like nothing else. It’s a vibe that I associate more so with NYC like at hotel bars, cocktail bars but glad there are places that offer this in San Francisco from cocktail bars, restaurants with bar seats and more. Martinis and french fries (New York Happy Meal) remind me of my time in New York where diners signaled some sort of desire to socialize without being disrupted mid-meal with something more involved, messy or intimate.

For me, martini and fries is a holdover while waiting for dinner plans later or or it’s a compromise for skipping dinner but not wanting to have a full meal too late nor have a drink without something to line the stomach. It’s the combo that either suggests you want to be alone but in public or you want to meet people out and about without the noise of bars, the full room of couples or the defeated retreat to a diner or fast-food options late at night.

For over a decade, I have been observing who folks sit, dine, position themselves, eat, drink, talk and communicate with others in social settings. Knowing if someone wants to be left alone, wants to chat for a bit and nothing more beyond that evening, is going to tell you their life jounery or is going to reveal one of the most intense sob stories about their recent break-up - these are all things you must brace for when meeting folks at the bar.

This is something I am fascinated by despite my analytical background as understanding nuance, justifying exceptions to the rule and predicting future behavior are some of the core underlyings of meeting people, making friends and dating in our modern age.

Where To Have A Martini And Fries In San Francisco

I noticed a few lists out there that covered this trend but for those who know, the idea has existed for some time before the term girl dinners became a thing. Even then, lack of context made it hard to assess the vibe of such places: is it mostly couples or singles, are there actually any seats at the bar, or are these places more so for full dining rather than a limited snack while you nurse your cocktail - context matters.

Some suggestions I recently read online were quite useless as some places don’t serve french fries or food for that matter - perhaps that looked at Yelp and saw places that mentioned french fries and martinis but actually referencing lack of fries in such an establishment.

Martinis and fries may be the play more than ever given soaring prices in San Francisco, growing loneliness epidemic, and a desire to be around people even if no words are spoken. Most places in the city don’t make this a thing but a few do (or at least did) but martinis and fries are not just a girl dinner, the repesent something more than that.

Below are some of my favorite places to have a martini and fries across the city, which bar areas have seats to actually sit down (not all do), which days are fries offered (some only once a week), places that serve fries beyond orders wtih burgers or other entrees, places that have French fries and not polenta, not yucca nor tofu fries, which ones actually have fries on the menu (some only offer mashed potatoes or tator tots instead, which are good but not quite the experience).

Below you will find San Francisco bars with great food, beyond just traditional charcuterie, tinned fish, and nuts. Also, some places fall more into more than one category so I made a note to emphasize offerings.

I left out a few places from this San Francisco Happy Hour list as I could not confirm current offerings. Since the last update, a few places have expanded their happy hour times and dates.

As for oysters, many places have raised rates from $1 to $1.50-$2 since the last update, but there are a couple spots still holding it down for $1.00 oysters. In addition to the list, I listed my favorite offerings for:

late-night happy hours; weekend happy hours; all-day happy hours; seafood hh
oyster happy hours (including rare $1 oyster deals); most went to $2 or more during COVID, inflation etc.

Places To Eat, Drink Solo In San Francisco

Bar seats are some of my favorite places to dine, whether alone or with friends and loved ones. There are many advantages to sitting at the bar including people-watching, socializing, getting drinks/orders sooner, finding last-minute seats more easily and more.

I have spent much of my adult life sitting at bar seats eating as well as helping people meet others, make friends and date more efficiently, and I do this by analyzing places from ambiance, setup, noise levels, demographics and more.

Where To Watch Sports In San Francisco

There are many sports bars in San Francisco but the team allegiances are not always obvious.

Some bars have misleading names. Some sports bars have allegiances to colleges (from different cities) than their professional sports city counterparts. Some bars are relatively unknown as they have allegiances to historically bad teams that no one asks to put up on TV’s. Some may only show one sport but not another. Some bars have multiple college fan bases. Some bars have changed ownership and don’t have as strong a following as they did before for their teams. Some bars just don’t make sense.

My teams have all relocated (A’s & Raiders are dead to me, Warriors in SF is just not the same; even my alma mater relocated, somewhat (USC moved to the Big Ten and I don’t get to see them locally anymore once they left the Pac-12).

Some of the areas near jury duty (both civic center and SOMA) are often ones people don’t really spend time at unless they work for the city or get divorced often.

Trying to search last-minute places can be annoying if you are looking for places with places to sit, covered areas (sun, rain or wind), things to do to kill time or places to work from during your break.

Many places below are also overlooked as they are much closer than one would assume given how multiple neighborhoods intersect at City Hall (and few people cross Market or Van Ness) or are usually closed on weekends.

Below is my jury duty survival guide on where to eat, drink, run errands, do work, grab a drink after a long day and more near jury duty locations at 400 McAllister (Civic Center) and 850 Bryant. It includes a hidden spot or two, many people in the area don’t even know about and many spots include distances and walking times and some notable closures (days of the week).

I also added some places for post-wedding/elopement lunches within walking distance.

Update: Most, if not all, the kegs have been tapped in Sacramento. Most recent tapping recorded was 2/23. Unless you have time, are willing to travel and/or have a flexible schedule, your best bet is to go to the Russian River brewery/taproom once they tap their kegs as the few remaining spots that are left below will likely have insane crowds as many either waited too long to try Pliny The Younger or were slow to find out about it.

Where To Get Pliny The Younger Sacramento 2026

2026 Pliny The Younger Tappings Folsom, Roseville, Citrus Heights, Rocklin

When places announce tapping, I will post the dates (and times when provided) below (updated multiple times a day). The list below will not contain every place, but it will contain many places across Sacramento areas.

Allotments vary from year to year. As with this hectic time, most places don’t release schedules more than 1 week out, others within a few days, a few within hours and some will do a surprise tapping without posting it online anywhere.

On top of that, some places have been known to kick kegs within an hour of tapping, others have been unable to serve people if they arrive exactly at tapping time (long lines), and others require advance tickets, beer flights or raffle.

One place may serve pints (will note it below), most will serve small 6-10 ounce pours and a few may only serve it alongside flights (mixed with other beers, unfortunately). Another place is low key and known to have it the next day and beyond. One place had an amazing deal for the early customers (not sure if they are doing it again in 2026).

I will update this list regularly, so check back often (see timestamp above). I will post the scheduled tapping times (in addition to dates) if provided. Always check day of to confirm days/times as they may change (super rare but has happened at least once).

Fastest keg kicked that I have seen is ~45 minutes; I have seen several kegs still available into the next day, but don’t count on it. I would estimate 65% kicked in 2-5 hours, 80% by end of day and <20% into the next day. It depends on when the keg is tapped (how early in the month, nearby locations, day/time it is tapped and what the conditions of the sale are i.e. price, flights, tickets, limits etc.

Update: Most kegs have been tapped in the Bay Area, only a handful remain. Unless you have time, are willing to travel and/or have a flexible schedule, your best bet is to go to the Russian River brewery/taproom once they tap their kegs as the few remaining spots that are left below will likely have insane crowds as many either waited too long to try Pliny The Younger or were slow to find out about it.

What Is San Francisco Beer Week?

San Francisco Beer Week is a ~10 day celebration of breweries in the Bay Area. It consists of a galas, competitions, collaborations, and more put on by the Bay Area Brewers Guild.

In addition to local Bay Area breweries, many taprooms and some breweries bring in amazing beers from beyond the Bay Area including Portland, Seattle, SoCal and the East Coast.

San Francisco Beer Week Schedule, Calendar of Events

The official calendar of events can be found here: https://sfbeerweek.org/, but please note, not all taprooms and breweries post their events on this site as it costs money to do so (anywhere from $150 to $850 depending on number of events, number of locations and what not). Their official calendar drops 2/9, but I have some events posted below already.

Given the sheer number of events, it can be overwhelming to figure out which ones to check out, find events not listed in the official site and prioritize places based on styles of beers, uniqueness of beers and what not so I created this list. It will be updated regularly. Similarly, some venues and breweries host their own events outside the official Beer Week schedule (before) and I have included some of those below.

San Francisco Beer Week Tickets

In the past, San Francisco Beer Week would kick-off with a big gala at Fort Mason but I forget when that stopped, sometime during Covid I believe.

Most events do not require tickets, but a few might. Additionally, some may offer reservations, as is the case with some lunches, dinners, and what not.

My Picks: San Francisco Beer Week Events 2026

There are over 200 events this year and for those that want to know where the best beer, most fun, unique events are, I aggregated ~40 events (including some not posted on the official beer week site and calendar). I visit breweries wherever I travel and appreciate all styles except pastry stouts, lactose IPA’s and slushie sours (my old laptop below).

Below are my curated picks for events across the San Francisco Bay Area and maybe a few just outside the Bay Area in surrounding areas.

Trying to find a last-minute dinner or after meal cocktail can be tough on this day but I will update this list with options in the coming days.

Best San Francisco Bay Area Cheeses

The San Francisco Bay Area is known for its oysters, wine, craft beer, and amazing produce, but one thing that really sets it apart is their cheese.

Given the recent unfortunate outcomes for several popular creameries:

Bohemian Creamery, Sebastopol closure 2024 (one of my all-time faves),
Moonside Creamery, Sebastopol closure 2020,
Joe Matos Cheese Factory closure 2025
Cowgirl Creamery’s retail closure 2022 (Pt Reyes Station)
Miyoko’s production moved from Fairfax & Petaluma to third parties 2023,

closures of a few retail speciality shops, a few acquisitions, investments:

Emmi Acquires Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery, Sebastopol in 2015
Straus Creamery receives equity stake from Grounded Capital 2024,

and an uncertainty around several local cheesemakers in the area, I felt it was time to share some of my favorite cheesemakers, cheeses, and cheese shops.

When searching for cheese, there are a ton of options out there and it can feel a bit overwhelming with places that have closed, have outdated hours on social media or business listings, stopped samples during COVID or don’t have much to do in the area other than shop and go.

This happy hour list for Marin County could not have come at a better time. I have spent hours manually assembling and updating this list (no AI) for you by researching menus, calling & messaging establishments and verifying offerings.

The list includes oysters, wine, beer, cocktails and more and is meant to focus on meaningful discounts, good value, rather than just $1 off items for limited offerings or mediocre discounts from steep regular prices.

Double 8 Dairy: Where To Find Buffalo Milk Soft Serve San Francisco Bay Area

Update March 18, 2026: It appears that the Buffalo Milk Soft Serve has been dwindling in production after changes in ownership and will no longer be made.

Instead, the soft serve will be made with Jersey Cows which is still great but not the same as this magical, limited edition version that people all over the world have come to love. Other locations have switched to soft serve made from Strauss (noted below) which is also amazing but again, not Double 8 Buffalo soft serve.

Whatever allotment is left, if any, I hope you enjoyed it. I knew the offering was on the rocks when I wrote this last September, after I contacted several folks in the industry, but hoped for the best and wanted my supporters to get one last cup or cone. I noticed a few suppliers had made the switch already when I wrote this in 2025, which caught my attention as one simply does not willingly stop serving this majestic treat.

Best Soft Serve San Francisco Bay Area

The best soft serve in all the San Francisco Bay Area is incredibly hard to find, and that’s because it’s made with buffalo milk. Most soft serve on the market is made with cow milk. Buffalo milk is fattier and richer in flavor. It’s the most decadent treat you can find.

It’s so insanely delicious that even people who are lactose intolerant will gladly suffer the consequences and immediate aftermath and make an exception for this dairy delight.

The number of water buffalo dairies is limited, and it’s hard to tell how many exist today. If you grew up in Marin or Sonoma or spent significant time there, chances are you may have tried one from none other than Double 8 Dairy in Valley Ford (Sonoma County).

At one point, it supplied restaurants like French Laundry, Sushi Ran, with their gelato and even Four Barrel Coffee used it in their affogatos. They even had their own packaged pints available for retail purchase.

I first recommended the buffalo milk soft serve on Eddie’s List as the weekly recommendation back in 2023, and I received numerous notes and emails from readers thanking me for this incredible find.

Unique Cocktail, Dive Bars & Beer Bars In San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the top cocktail cities in the world - ask around. Usually, most cities will have a signature drink, have 1-2 popular bars or just have cheap dive bars with not much going on in town but San Francisco has many bars with unique offerings, vibes and more.

Some bars are known for not really having a menu but rather a drink you should stick to. Others have a unique vibe with over the top decor. Other bars have a classic feel while others are straight-up weird or historic.

Over the years, I have either taken guests here for something unique they can’t get back home, have taken photos for clients who have a specific request for their dating profile photos or just pulled up a seat and just enjoy what makes these spaces fun and unique.

When I travel, I usually seek out places that are unique, cocktails/bites that I can’t get back home or order items that places do well - but that’s just me. Here are the drinks and bars that make San Francisco unique, including some that are not on menus anymore but are available if you are in the know. ; )
