With rising gas costs, more people driving and uncertainty around long-term public transportation costs, bicycling has become a crucial component for transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area. Often times, racks are overflowed, broken or non-existent. Most people are unaware of ways to get racks installed by cities at no cost to them, business owners and more. A few cities make it really easy to submit request while others offer no clear method to request bike racks.

Below are tips on how to get bike racks installed in much needed areas as well as how to submit requests to increase chances of success.

Tips on how to request bike racks in the San Francisco Bay Area.

• Cities prioritize new racks near schools, transit stops, and major commercial hubs.

• Contact business owners, shops, landlords, schools; ask them to request racks.

• Rally neighbors and send requests for strategic locations.

• Illustrate a need i.e. distance to closest rack, photos of overfilled/damaged racks.

• Use a photo or maps screenshot to suggest a visual idea for proposed racks.

• missing volunteer info on landing pages (have to click through 2, 3, 4+ pages to get to info about what kind of volunteers are needed, if there are even any opportunities available

• posting volunteer info only on newsletters (after signup)

• missing info about work done (is it physical, age requirements, can people show up last minute without signing up, commitment levels etc.)

Often one has to search through 3-6 pages to learn more, see that slots are filled up, realize that a timeframe commitment or training is needed or figure out that the location is too far or not easy to get to or timing won’t work.

There are many benefits to volunteering, including:

NERT Training Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams

In the event of a major disaster, resources in Marin can be stretched thin, especially if many personnel are located outside the county or have difficulty getting through narrow roads and may be unable to arrive promptly or at all.

By obtaining training for NERT (or CERT), you can greatly reduce the liability you may cause by being more prepared and helping others seek training and help in an emergency.

San Francisco Bay Area Trinket Trade Boxes

Trinket boxes have been around for a while but they are gaining momentum as new ones sprout up and go viral on Instagram, Tik-Tok etc. Some popular trinket boxes were set up as early as Covid as a way to share things with neighbors while limiting contact. Others came together as a way to re-use items and not contribute to trash piles. Some just throught it was a cool way to help keep kids (and adults) entertained during the repetitive days of the pandemic.

As with all my guides, I will update them based on feedback, user interest, etc. If you like it please give it a like, hit the share button otherwise I will focus on other guides to maintain, add new entries to etc.

What’s In Trinket Trade Boxes?

Some people call these “Tchotchkes” (pronounced chotch-key) and others may refer to them as chingaderas.

Similar to that random drawer in your kitchen, it can contain things you think are useful but may not use often or don’t want to get rid of.

They contain rechargeable batteries, matches, ornaments, small toys, coupons, spare change, bookmarks, left over public transit cards and gift cards, resumes, qr codes to dating profiles, directions to a treasure hunt, exes belongings, pens and more.

Where Are Trinket Trade Boxes Located?

Some trinket boxes are attached to poles, some are on private property, a few have been repurposed mailboxes and others have set-up residency similar to public libraries.

They are inspired by several other related efforts to make art public but also share with the community similar to community kitchen & public pantries.

Gnome houses have been set up on a Bay Area trail though they are not always there nor visible (treat for those who are curious, persistent and take time to smell the roses (moss).

Mini art and garden glass houses are common in certain neighborhoods in the Bay Area area similar to ones like this.

There are even specialized libraries like this cookbook public library box.

Summer is here and free summer concerts are underway across the San Francisco Bay Area. Many cities and retail centers are hosting free music in the park and free summer concerts. There are some incredible bands performing this summer including at least 1 Grammy Award-winning band that typically plays in large concert halls and tours all over the world, but you get to see them for free. San Francisco Public Restroom Guide, Tips

When it comes to public bathrooms in San Francisco, there are some important pieces of information one should know, whether you are visiting or if you live here. A lot of the information about public restrooms is scattered all over the internet, and most people are unaware of the options they have given the different entities that operate restrooms.

At one point, I had this insane bathroom spreadsheet with codes for private institutions given my line of work and clients needing places to change and what not during photoshoots. I kept it private as public lists being shared online led to bathrooms closing, locks being added, codes changing or access being reduced. It was not so much that more people were using their restrooms but the fact that this information was online and public that led to shifts.

• Civic Center/UN Plaza (San Francisco) - renovations needed.

  • There is a staffed pitstop restroom located at Grove and Larkin Streets that is open daily, 7am-7pm. There is another at U.N. Plaza that is open 24 hours/day.

• 16th St. Mission (San Francisco) - a brand new restroom must be built.

  • There is a staffed pitstop restroom located in the plaza that is open 24 hours/day. There is another one at 16th and Capps streets that is open Monday-Friday 11am-6pm.

• 24th St. Mission (San Francisco) - a brand new restroom must be built.

  • There is a staffed pitstop restroom located in the west plaza that is open daily from 7am-7pm.

San Francisco City, Government Building, Public Bathrooms

Although not listed, there are restrooms in public government buildings like:

• City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place

Is BART Safe To Ride?

Yes, BART is much safer to ride these days given new BART gates installed at stations that completed in August 2025. That said, using good judgment, being aware of surroundings helps tremendously to reduce chances of theft just like in any city, and any other public transportation service.

When Do BART Trains Start, Stop Running Each Day?

BART Schedule, Holiday Hours: Starting, Stopping Times, Frequency

5AM-12AM. BART schedule has trains coming around every 20 minutes with off-peak schedules having them come around every 30 minutes or so.

That said, not all lines run during those hours, some may end before that time.

Rides for BART start at around $2.55, but really develops value for further stops. A ride from downtown Oakland to Mission District for example is $4.90 while getting off early on the Embarcadero is $4.50. Fares are higher when going to/from SFO airport.

How To Pay For BART?

Get a paper ticket at stations, pay with credit card/debit card tap, use clipper card app or use a physical clipper card.

• How To Ride BART Without Clipper Card?

  • Apple Pay, Google Pay, Credit/Debit Card w/ Tap To Pay & Vending Machines in Station

• How To Ride BART With Kids?

  • Kids 4 & under ride for free. If you are using clipper card or debit/credit tap, it only works for one person. You can’t use it for your partner, kid, parent, mistress, nor misteress. If you want to pay for multiple people, get physical tickets at vending machines at booths, have them use their own card or you can use two different devices.

  • Use Apple or Google pay on your phone, use the vending machine at stations or use a Clipper Card.

BART and other service providers offer discounts when you connect to other lines, during a certain window of time and using the same (and certain) payment methods. It’s a great way to save money when using two or more service providers on your travels.

How To Use BART In The Bay Area

BART uses a tap-in, tap-out system. It requires users to pay before entering stations and tapping out to leave stations. If you fail to tap out, it may charge you the maximum amount on your clipper or credit card.

BART Backpack Etiquette

Remove backpacks from your pack, put them on front, down by your feet or on your side if you optimize for space that only fits for bags. The reason for this is that you occupy more space in front of you already (feet extend forward) and so there is space in front of you that is largely unoccupied.

BART Transfers

• Transfers may require riders to take stairs or escalators so it helps to know which direction you need to go and be mindful for outages if you are in a rush, have limited mobility or carrying luggage.

• Civil citation fines are $75 for adults and $55 for minors. Community service options are available.

• Criminal citation fines are not to exceed $250.

  • Stations include: San Francisco International Airport, West Oakland, Embarcadero, Civic Center, and Powell Street.

Taking BART To SFO Airport

You can take BART directly to SFO (International Terminal), from there, you can walk to terminals 1 and 3 or use the SFO AirTrain to get to your terminal.

That said, BART runs about every 20 minutes from Millbrae station and the airtrains come often but may not work (two rails, one goes clockwise, one goes counterclockwise).

If you are driving to Millbrae, the parking lot is a bit confusing as the floors are not well labeled i.e. which go up, down or exit and which floor you need to take the elevator to connect to BART/Caltrain platform.

BART FAQ’s, Tips

• When using Google maps or other directions, be sure to add extra time for trains as sometimes there are backups at gates, sometimes you will need to ride down a couple flights of stairs, other times may have broken escalators, or you may have issues with your clipper card (always have a back up method just in case).

• Check your clipper card and credit card for possible duplicate charges that may have resulted from Cliiper Card 2.0 roll out.

Key Fob Repeater Theft, San Francisco Car Break-ins

Ideal targets are people who park in their driveway or in front of their homes and leave their key fobs near the front door close enough so that thieves can use a repeater and enter your car, steal the registration or valet key.

• Don’t leave your keys next to the front door.

• Manually lock your doors with the key instead of the fob as people will collect signals and wait until you leave your vehicle to access it later.

How To Prevent Garage Break-Ins San Francisco Bay Area

One of the biggest culprits for garage break-ins in the Bay Area is bike thets. Lots of bikes are stolen in SF. Whether from streets or garages, they are stolen nearly daily in the city. Knowing how to lock up bikes and look out for your property will reduce chances of theft.

1. Hide your bike in your garage, lock it up. Don’t leave your garage door open for too long. Thieves browse open garage doors all the time.

2. Don’t rely on garage door openers. Lock your garage with a lock. Learn to deactivate the emergency release lock/latch (thieves can break small window and open the garage door with a manual release).

3. Avoid expensive bikes if possible.

4. Add an airtag or similar tracking device to find stolen bike.

5. Register your bike with the city.

6. Get rental insurance. Document bike purchases if you need to file a claim.

7. Bring your bike upstairs/inside your home to reduce the chances of theft.

8. If traveling, move bike inside and lock it up if possible.

9. Some people leave lights and TVs on timers.

10. If you lock bikes in garage, may want to lock them with weights or something to make it harder to carry out.

Why Do Car Thieves Steal Registration?

If they also stole your car keys, they can break into your home if they have your house keys too.

How To Prevent Bike Thefts San Francisco Bay Area

1. Get a good lock. Get two, even three, if paranoid. The more locks you have and the stronger they are, the more likely thieves will move on to other easier targets.

   1. 2 locks for everyday use;

   2. 3 locks if a bad neighborhood or expensive bike or long period of time

      1. 4 locks if 2 out of 3 above

      2. 5 locks if 3 out of 3 above

2. Remove bike seats and get wheel locks. Some locks are gravity-activated i.e. lock if bike is not turned on it’s seat/handles.

3. When locking bike, make sure to leave as little room possible in the ‘U’ so it’s harder for thieves to get tools to lodge in the lock and cut open.

4. Avoid parking bikes overnight or on single racks like the ones below as some thieves may try to remove bolts/screws from them.

How To Reduce Mail Theft, Stop Porch Pirates

1. Put a hold on mail and packages if traveling as this is an easy way for thieves to see who is gone for several days.

2. Sign up for notifications from shipping companies so you get email/phone notifications when it’s out for delivery, track location and get alerted for delivery.

   1. Doesn’t always work and many thieves follow delivery drivers, FYI.

3. Deliver packages to a drop-off point, don’t deliver home if you don’t intend on being home or if you don’t have a bell or if delivery drivers don’t ring it (typical with places on hills, stairs)

How To Reduce Retail Break-Ins San Francisco

Business owners like Foggy Notion on Clement leave an empty cash drawer in the front door saying no cash on premises.

I have seen similar efforts from other businesses that have been broken into and for the most part, have had better success at dodging break-ins. Nothing is perfect/guaranteed but if you can reduce chances of break-ins but a little with relatively little/to no cost, I think it’s worth it.

This won’t stop all burglaries but I guarantee it does reduce chances of break-ins tremendously.

• Limit social media (don’t make accounts private, don’t post public vacation photos)

• Put a hold on mail

• Send packages to drop point vs leaving on doorstep

• Use timers at night to turn on at night

When it comes to promoting events, there’s a lot of consideration needed to get the word out, in a timely manner, to those you wish to reach.

I have observed countless organizers from large-scale events, small intimate talks, pop-ups and everything in between, market events with various results.

There is no magic formula, blueprint to guarantee success but there are certainly ways to improve turnout, reduce chances of it failing miserably if you follow some simple guidelines.

The first thing you need to do is have a plan. Too many folks wing it with planning and awesome people are naturally interested, available, and aware of events you may be promoting.

Event planning starts before you actually decide to host an event. It starts with networking, building a website and/or social media page, and growing an email list. Sure there are shortcuts such as flyers, ads, viral social media posts but that can be costly, inefficient, hard to track or ineffective if your event is not interesting or targeted to the wrong audiences.

You need to develop a timeline for execution so that you have time to do basic things like:

• create a flyer, update website, print flyers, post flyers

• book talent, email subscribers

• secure venues, sponsors, permits

• post about it on social media, notify news outlets

• and develop back-up plans in case of weather or more

• share events with outlets, in a timely manner, for their schedules

Some organizers are ok with winging it which can be fine but can hurt chances of future events if your core audience and supporters have a poor experience.

How To Promote Shows, Concerts Offline In San Francisco Bay Area

Promoting events offline is usually done based on things like location, target audience and can either be done in advance to build awareness, sell tickets, build momentum or last-minute push to sell inventory, target stragglers or notify folks for future events in case sold out or unable to make the current event.

Some popular places can be around:

• Walking/commute routes, public transportation stops

• Outside venue, at partners’ place of business

• Outside, near related venues

Depending on the city where your event takes place, one should be familiar with rules around posting flyers. Each city has a list of guidelines, timelines, and more, around size, location, information posted and more.

One helpful thing to note is to observe patterns and trends in places where you are thinking of posting flyers:

• How often are flyers removed

• Is proper etiquette performed or are people posting flyers over existing ones

• Are people reading flyers at said location

• How are people walking by poles, bulletin boards (height, from which side)

This may seem like overkill but after years of research, analyses and observation, this accumulated knowledge has allowed me to rigorously test and figure out how to expand reach, be efficient and each audiences.

How To Submit Events, Shows Online San Francisco Bay Area

A lot of work is needed to promote events online including design, timelines for posting, coordinating with others and more.

Simply making a post on Instagram or Facebook can be ineffective if you have a history of posting too much and diluting reach of posts, not posting enough and having your page be a ghost town or not having a large enough audience to be able to sell.

Even though Facebook and Instagram are owned by the same company, posting to both can be effective because not all folks use both platforms. Sure there is some overlap but posting on each can maximize reach and make it easier to reach different demographics.

Also, if you are able to collaborate on posts (invite collaborators) to reach additional, related audiences, that can help immensely.

In terms of where to post events beyond social media, having a dedicated page on your website can be super helpful as social media posts and ticketing sites can have awful SEO. This may be difficult if you rely on a webmaster to update site, make changes and more.

Even if your event does not require tickets, using ticketing platforms or registration sites can be helpful to collect numbers and emails for future events, notices and changes.

Depending on the type of event, location and more, you should consider submitting events to event calendars, city/state websites, local Facebook community pages, and reaching out to journalists (especially if it’s a unique event that can go viral). There are general rules around how to contact each outlet, how much notice is needed and how to address them. People have super poor awareness around etiquette and how to personalize notices.

You don’t need to be an SEO expert to have your page rank well for events but you do need time, awareness of basic tips and solid pitch as even great events can flop if not described adequately or excessively promoted, raising doubt. Similarly, you don’t need a graphic designer to make a great flyer but you do need to have some basic skills to get eyeballs (do not use AI).

Free Senior Activities San Francisco

Weekends, especially 3-day weekends, can be busy around San Francisco. I highly recommend checking things out during the week if possible, if not first thing in the morning to find parking more easily and deal with less crowds.

• Palace of Fine Arts

  • The Palace of Fine Arts is a beautiful space but can get crowded with narrow walkways on weekends and one section of the water but that can be avoided if you walk around the outer edges.

• Presidio Tunnel Tops

  • This newly created area in the Presidio has amazing views of the bridge and Chrissy Field areas. Parking lot is across the street. Mostly open space, limited shade and covered areas unless you dine at the market or snag a bench seat outside.

• Letterman Digital Arts Center, Pond

  • Beautiful area with paved roads, beautiful views of the Palace of Fine Arts across the ways. Several benches and a perfect time to visit during cherry blossom season. Nearby is the newly opened Star Wars General Store, Starbucks for coffee (bathrooms), and Presidio Piccino (covered outdoor seating). Don’t forget to check out the Yoda statue on the other side of the buildings.

• Legion of Honor, Lands End

  • General admission to the Legion of Honor is complimentary for those who have disabilities, and includes free admission for a guest. Please contact access@famsf.org to request access tickets at least two weeks prior to your visit.

• De Young, California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park

  • General admission to the de Young is complimentary for those who have disabilities, and includes free admission for a guest. Please contact access@famsf.org to request access tickets at least two weeks prior to your visit.

• Shakespeare Garden

  • The Shakespeare Garden is a peaceful place with a few benches and if you time it right, have some spectacular bloom with the canopy trees on the walkway. Free to visit but there may be weddings, private events here (usually their Google business listing reflects this).

• Botanical Gardens, Golden Gate Park

  • Most of the gardens is wheelchair accessible but a few parts are not (hilly areas). They even have free wheelchairs to lend out (first come, first serve). Free 7:30-9am (all), free for SF residents and free 2nd Tuesdays of the month.

• Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park

  • Fully accessible via wheelchairs but can be narrow in some areas. They do offer manual wheelchairs (first come, first serve). Free admission, first Tuesdays.

• Dahlia Garden, Next To Conservatory of Flowers

  • Getting here is a bit tough so if you are low on erergy or mobility, try to arrive early in the morning to get parking by the tennis courts. Peak time of year is around August.

• Be sure to check out the Parks Conservatory site for more trails in SF and Marin.

• Golden Gate National Recreation Area has beach wheelchairs (w/ 5 days advance notice)

• Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park

  • The garden is next to the De Young Museum and nearby the Botanical Gardens and Shakespeare Gardens, but it’s not really wheelchair friendly. Some spots are steep, some have stepping stones to navigate the space, the tea house can be crowded and not fully ADA compliant but it might be worth stopping by during the free hours 9-10AM, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays to observe the space from the entrance area.

• Presidio Tour on Shuttle Bus

  • The Presidio offers to shuttle buses. The first circles around the Presidio with stops at Inspiration Point, Visitor Center and more. The other goes between the Visitor Center and downtown SF. Both are free but the downtown shuttle is limited to residents during commute hours (see site for details).

• Free MUNI Rides For Seniors

  • MUNI buses are free for some seniors. Some of the most scenic routes I recommend taking during middle of the day to avoid commuters and late night partiers include: 33 bus, J train (top of Dolores Park), 22 Fillmore, K-Ingleside/T-Third Street, F-Market Street Car, 28 19th Avenue (from California North), 43 Masonic, 39 Coit Tower, 30 Marina (from Washington Square Park North)

  • Cable cars are not free for seniors but they are discounted from $9 to $4.

• Free classes for seniors (55+) through CCSF

• Lindy in the Park (Swing), Lesson + Social Dancing, 11-2pm

• Senior Activities, San Francisco Public Library

  • Not exclusive to seniors only, but a large portion of attendees are seniors. Events range from art, education, games and more.

• San Francisco Parks & Rec

  • They offer many classes and activities for seniors. See list here.

Senior Activities, Things To Do San Francisco

• Surrey Bike Rentals, Golden Gate Park

  • If you get one of these, you can navigate the park. They are kind of bulky so ideal if you have others peddling too. Good alternative if you have someone who has a harder time getting around but doesn’t want a wheelchair.

• Institute of Aging, San Francisco

  • Friendship Line: I highly recommend you share this with seniors you know. Also, a fantastic place to volunteer as well.

  • They also have an enrichment center in the Presidio next to Colibri, Officers Club. Institute on Aging’s Enrichment Center

• San Francisco Zoo

  • $15 wheelchair rentals, first come first served. I like coming here for the red pandas.

Senior Walking Routes San Francisco

These are some of my favorite flat areas to walk around in San Francisco.

• Embarcadero from Giants Ballpark to Pier 39. There are lots of spaces to take a break, grab a drink, get some shade behind the buildings and you don’t have to cross any streets (other than a few driveways). Saturdays can be crazy with the farmers markets and avoid weekends and pre/post Giants games to avoid crowds.

• Salesforce Park is beautiful, has elevators at either end and is great for eating a bagged lunch, partaking in any activities that day, checking out any performances or just taking in all the plants and trees in the area.

• Letterman Digital Arts Center, Presidio is a beautiful area with a pond, views of the Palace of Fine Arts across the way, and Cherry Blossoms are great for viewing during the limited window in late winter, early spring.

These institutions have memberships, classes, events and more with lots of seniors in attendance. I know I have been to all of these myself.

• City Arts & Lectures, Hayes Valley

• Commonwealth Club, Embarcadero

• JCCSF, Presidio Heights

• Mechanics Institute, Financial District

• Not exclusively seniors but generally an older trivia crowd than most, check out the monthly event at Ironwoods, Presidio Golf Course.

• Wednesday Big Table (Monthly Event), Spec’s, North Beach

• Author Talks (Various Locations)

• Volunteering (low-impact activities like food pantries)

• Simple Pleasures, Outer Richmond

Day Trips San Francisco Bay Area For Seniors

• Muir Woods, Mt Tamalpais, Marin County

  • Requires reservations but you should be able to drop off folks near the front and come back after you find parking. There are some wheelchairs on loan here (first come first served). Mostly covered so great even on a hot day.

• Jack London Square, Oakland

  • Paved areas, some areas along water may be closed but mostly open space, nice weather and some shops, breweries and eateries in the area.

• Stanford Campus, Arizona Desert

  • Campus is beautful and if you go on weekends or when school is out, it’s a peaceful walk. Highly recommend the Arizona gardens too (cactus botanical garden).

• Filoli Gardens, Woodside

  • Immaculate garden, check for special events, weddings.

• Sausalito Ferry

  • Once you get to Sausalito, it’s mostly flat on the other side and mostly scenic if you stay along the walkway by the water. Lots of restaurants, a few benches but can easily get crowded on weekends and holidays. Go early in the morning for smallest crowds.

• Alameda Ferry

  • Different vantage points than Sausalito ferry but highly recommend it. There is also a shuttle to Jack London Square (which is another area I recommend)

• Marin Art & Garden Center, Ross

  • Beautiful free garden with programming during the week. Can get super hot during the warmer months so check ahead as the area has partial coverage and limited seating/benches when crowded on weekends.

• UC Berkeley Campus

  • It can be a bit hilly in some areas but sections of the campus are flat and some have minimal grades. It’s filled with amazing architecture although weekdays can be very crowded.

• Oakland Zoo

  • Wheelchair rentals are $15 and first come first serve.

College Classes San Francisco Bay Area For Seniors

  • Free for seniors; Yoga, Swimming, Fitness Walks & more

Free Wheelchair Friendly Activities San Francisco

Wheelchair Accessible & Limited Mobility Activities San Francisco

Weekends, especially 3-day weekends, can be busy around San Francisco. I highyl recommend checking things out during the week if possible, if not first thing in the morning to find parking more easily and deal with less crowds.

• Palace of Fine Arts

  • The Palace of Fine Arts is a beautiful space but can get crowded with narrow walkways on weekends and one section of the water but that can be avoided if you walk around the outer edges.

• Presidio Tunnel Tops

  • This newly created area in the Presidio has amazing views of the bridge and Chrissy Field areas. Parking lot is across the street. Mostly open space, limited shade and covered areas unless you dine at the market or snag a bench seat outside.

• Letterman Digital Arts Center, Pond

  • Beautiful area with paved roads, beautiful views of the Palace of Fine Arts across the ways. Several benches and a perfect time to visit during cherry blossom season. Nearby is the newly opened Star Wars General Store, Starbucks for coffee (bathrooms), and Presidio Piccino (covered outdoor seating). Don’t forget to check out the Yoda statue on the other side of the buildings.

• Legion of Honor, Lands End

  • General admission to the Legion of Honor is complimentary for those who have disabilities, and includes free admission for a guest. Please contact access@famsf.org to request access tickets at least two weeks prior to your visit.

• De Young, California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park

  • General admission to the de Young is complimentary for those who have disabilities, and includes free admission for a guest. Please contact access@famsf.org to request access tickets at least two weeks prior to your visit.

• Shakespeare Garden

  • The Shakespeare Garden is a peaceful place with a few benches and if you time it right, have some spectacular bloom with the canopy trees on the walkway. Free to visit but there may be weddings, private events here (usually their Google business listing reflects this).

• Botanical Gardens, Golden Gate Park

  • Most of the gardens is wheelchair accessible but a few parts are not (hilly areas). They even have free wheelchairs to lend out (first come, first serve). Free 7:30-9am (all), free for SF residents and free 2nd Tuesdays of the month.

• Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park

  • Fully accessible via wheelchairs but can be narrow in some areas. They do offer manual wheelchairs (first come, first serve). Free admission, first Tuesdays.

• Dahlia Garden, Next To Conservatory of Flowers

  • Getting here is a bit tough so if you are low on energy or mobility, try to arrive early in the morning to get parking by the tennis courts. Peak time of year is around August.

• Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park

  • The garden is next to the De Young Museum and nearby the Botanical Gardens and Shakespeare Gardens, but it’s not really wheelchair friendly. Some spots are steep, some have stepping stones to navigate the space, the tea house can be crowded and not fully ADA compliant but it might be worth stopping by during the free hours 9-10AM, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays to observe the space from the entrance area.

• Presidio Tour on Shuttle Bus

  • The Presidio offers to shuttle buses. The first shuttle route circles around the Presidio with stops at Inspiration Point, Visitor Center and more. The other goes between the Visitor Center and downtown SF. Both are free but the downtown shuttle is limited to residents during commute hours (see site for details).

• Be sure to check out the Parks Conservatory site for more trails in SF and Marin.

• Golden Gate National Recreation Area beach wheelchairs w/ 5 day advance notice.

Limited Mobility Activities, Things To Do

• Surrey Bike Rentals, Golden Gate Park

  • If you get one of these, you can navigate the park. They are kind of bulky so ideal if you have others peddling too. Good alternative if you have someone who has a harder time getting around but doesn’t want a wheelchair.

• San Francisco Zoo

  • $15 wheelchair rentals, first come first served. I like coming here for the red pandas.

• SFMOMA

  • They used to have free first Thursdays, but that program is on pause.

Wheelchair Accessible Routes San Francisco

These are some of my favorite flat areas to walk around in San Francisco.

• Embarcadero from Giants Ballpark to Pier 39. There are lots of spaces to take a break, grab a drink, get some shade behind the buildings and you don’t have to cross any streets (other than a few driveways). Saturdays can be crazy with the farmers markets and avoid weekends and pre/post Giants games to avoid crowds.

• Salesforce Park is beautiful, has elevators at either end and is great for eating a bagged lunch, partaking in any activities that day, checking out any performances or just taking in all the plants and trees in the area.

• Letterman Digital Arts Center, Presidio is a beautiful area with a pond, views of the Palace of Fine Arts across the way, and Cherry Blossoms are great for viewing during the limited window in late winter, early spring.

Wheelchair Accessible Day Trips San Francisco Bay Area

• Muir Woods, Mt Tamalpais, Marin County

  • Requires reservations but you should be able to drop off folks near the front and come back after you find parking. There are some wheelchairs on loan here (first come first served). Mostly covered so great even on a hot day.

• Jack London Square, Oakland

  • Paved areas, some areas along water may be closed but mostly open space, nice weather and some shops, breweries and eateries in the area.

• Stanford Campus, Arizona Desert

  • Campus is beautful and if you go on weekends or when school is out, it’s a peaceful walk. Highly recommend the Arizona gardens too (cactus botanical garden).

• Filoli Gardens, Woodside

  • Immaculate garden, check for special events, weddings. Complimentary wheelchairs are on a first come, first served basis.

• Sausalito Ferry

  • Once you get to Sausalito, it’s mostly flat on the other side and mostly scenic if you stay along the walkway by the water. Lots of restaurants, a few benches but can easily get crowded on weekends and holidays. Go early in the morning for smallest crowds.

• Alameda Ferry

  • Different vantage points than Sausalito ferry but highly recommend it. There is also a shuttle to Jack London Square (which is another area I recommend)

• Marin Art & Garden Center, Ross

  • Beautiful free garden with programming during the week. Can get super hot during the warmer months so check ahead as the area has partial coverage and limited seating/benches when crowded on weekends.

• UC Berkeley Campus

  • It can be a bit hilly in some areas but sections of the campus are flat and some have minimal grades. It’s filled with amazing architecture although weekdays can be very crowded.

• Oakland Zoo

  • Wheelchair rentals are $15 and first come first serve.

ILRCSF’s Community Activities Program (CAP)

• Free cultural events for seniors and people with disabilities, funded by the city.
