Best Drinks, Food To Bring To A BBQ, Picnic San Francisco

If you are anything like the younger me, you might overthink what to bring to a social function you were invited to. Whether it’s a house party, bbq, picnic or similar, what you bring can work wonders for conversation starters, meeting new people or making friends. I know as I have spent 20+ years analyzing responses, reactions from gifts, drinks and snacks people have brought to social functions in the city.

Below are a few recommendations of things to bring that are relatively easily accessible across the city, across all price points at stores, farmers markets and more.

Beyond specific recommendations, you will get a better understanding of sizes, and why I recommend them i.e. time of the year, versatility and more. I will also highlight considerations, specific questions to ask based on your event, time of year, occasion and more.

The recommendations I have accumulated are a result of lots of trial and error, saying yes to nearly all social invites, amazing friends, observing reactions at snack tables at parties, diverse clients & readers, and me talking to people at bars and restaurants all over the city. Whether you get an invite to a potluck picnic, dinner party, Mexican baptism (party) or Russian toddler’s b-day celebration, there is something for everyone here.

Fillmore Heritage Center To Re-Open Later This Year

Per a press release issued by the city last week, the vacant Fillmore Heritage Center that housed Yoshi’s (closed in 2014) will re-open later this year. In a larger effort to “strengthen the Fillmore corridor”, the city is focusing on activating spaces in the area by working with local community (artists, businesses and community groups).

On May 22nd, Fillmore After Dark was launched to bring more people to the neighborhood. That theme was Night Market: Bingo & Bites. Future dates and themes include:

• August 14: Business Crawl and Night Market

• October 31: Art Walk and Night Market (Halloween)

• December 11: Fillmore Holiday Night Market

Applications For Activations Fillmore Heritage Center

Starting later this month, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) will be an open call for applications for organizers, community groups, businesses, artists and musicians to host events and activations in the space. Once that information is provided, I will update this article with details.

According to San Francisco Chronicle, there will be no funding to host events but the space will be offered free of charge.

$50,000-$100,000 Grants For Small Businesses

In related news…

About two months ago, District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood announced $50k-$100 grants to small businesses to occupy new storefronts on empty spaces across the city in specific neighborhoods and blocks, one of those neighborhoods was Fillmore Street between McAllister Street and Geary Boulevard. The deadline for that was May 29th, 2026 5pm OR until funding runs out (website states that the application window is closed as of June 5, 2026).

Given all the attention in the area, it will be interesting to see what happens with the empty storefronts in the next 3-6 months.

Future of the Fillmore Heritage Center: Blue Note Jazz?

OEWD will conduct research to assess options to restore the facilities and explore future lease options. Given that Blue Note Napa closed in 2025 and is eyeing a San Francisco location, this seems like the most likely or at least most desired option, given the live music space in the former Yoshi’s building and the Fillmore’s rich jazz history.

As some of you recall, last year, the city reached a tentative agreement to settle an unpaid $5.5M loan with the developer of the Fillmore Heritage Center for a mere $100,000.

If the Blue Note doesn’t move into the former Yoshi’s space, one other possiblity could be across the bay at the former New Parish space in Oakland that was recently put up for sale.

Siesta Valley Bowl Music Venue

Siesta Valley Foundation has launched a summer concert series at the Siesta Valley Bowl, formerly the California Shakespeare Theater. It will feature over a dozen shows starting this evening, and there may be room for more acts per the EBMUD agreement that outlines up to 40-50 annual events. A more recent press release pushes up that number to 75-100 performances annually from April to November.

This amphitheater is a small, intimate venue, and it was one of the best venues to watch plays before it closed. The photo above was from a performance I saw in July 2017 - The Glass Menagerie preview.

Sun Valley Bowl is partnering with Blue Note Entertainment Group for talent booking, meaning we should see some great acts come through the venue.

It’s been 10 years since I photographed the San Francisco Pride Parade and it was an incredible experience being in the middle of Market Street seeing all the floats and all the faces in the crowds. While the San Francisco Pride Parade is the main event of the week in San Francisco, there are lots of festivals, parades, events throughout the Bay Area.

Most of the Bay Area Pride events start in June but some of them don’t happen until later on in the year - August, September and October while a few start this month in May. Below are some of the Bay Area Pride Parades, Festivals, Marches and Events to look forward to and mark on your calendars.

The Stern Grove Festival is a non-profit organization that puts together free concerts for the masses in an incredible natural venue.

Some acts that have performed here include: Los Van Van, Pink Martini, Too Short, Carlos Santana, Flaming Lips, Diana Ross, Janelle Monae and more.

Stern Grove Ticket Change

Stern Grove has tinkered with their ticketing protocols over the years. In the good old days, it was first come first serve which allowed die-hard fan to get seats at shows. In the effort to be more “equitable”, it switched to a lottery system in which people can apply for tickets through a series of releases via a lottery system.

Why Did Stern Grove Change Their Ticketing System?

They claim is was for security, crowd management, privacy (sound checks in the morning) etc. I get this, (although Hardly Strictly Bluegrass does just fine w/o tickets), but the new ticketing platform is not great and could use some significant improvements.

6 weeks before a concert, Stern Grove releases a window for lottery applications.

People can request up to 4 tickets.

If you win, tickets must be redeemed within 72 hours.

Thanks to the lottery system, people are now selling tickets online on platforms like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.

People are claiming tickets but are re-selling free tickets to people.

How To Improve Stern Grove Festival Ticketing System

• Tie tickets to a phone number.

• Encourage people to return tickets to Stern Grove Festival so reduces chances of unused tickets that can’t be shared last minute.

• Allocate tickets to San Francisco first, mostly

• Prevent people from getting tickets who sell tickets, don’t use them.

• Limit ticket users to 2 shows per season (or whatever is appropriate

• Limit tickets to 2 people instead of 4 people

San Francisco Public Restroom Guide, Tips

When it comes to public bathrooms in San Francisco, there are some important pieces of information one should know, whether you are visiting or if you live here. A lot of the information about public restrooms is scattered all over the internet, and most people are unaware of the options they have given the different entities that operate restrooms.

At one point, I had this insane bathroom spreadsheet with codes for private institutions given my line of work and clients needing places to change and what not during photoshoots. I kept it private as public lists being shared online led to bathrooms closing, locks being added, codes changing or access being reduced. It was not so much that more people were using their restrooms but the fact that this information was online and public that led to shifts.

Below is an overview of all the entities that operate public restrooms in San Francisco and where those public restrooms are located.

“Nearly all BART stations have public restrooms (in San Francisco)” except…

• Civic Center/UN Plaza (San Francisco) - renovations needed.

  • There is a staffed pitstop restroom located at Grove and Larkin Streets that is open daily, 7am-7pm. There is another at U.N. Plaza that is open 24 hours/day.

• 16th St. Mission (San Francisco) - a brand new restroom must be built.

  • There is a staffed pitstop restroom located in the plaza that is open 24 hours/day. There is another one at 16th and Capps streets that is open Monday-Friday 11am-6pm.

• 24th St. Mission (San Francisco) - a brand new restroom must be built.

  • There is a staffed pitstop restroom located in the west plaza that is open daily from 7am-7pm.

San Francisco City, Government Building, Public Bathrooms

Although not listed, there are restrooms in public government buildings like:

• City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place

• Jury Duty Services 850 Bryant (SOMA) and 400 McAllister

• San Francisco Federal Court: 450 Golden Gate Avenue

• San Francisco Federal Building: 7th & Mission (will need government ID/passport)

These all require you to go through metal detectors.

Public Toilets, Bathrooms Outer Richmond

• Missing: Lands End Lookout Center (M-F, 9-5AM)

Public Restrooms Downtown San Francisco, Union Square

As you can see, this part of town doesn’t have many bathrooms for the public despite large concentration of businesses, tourism and more.

Even before the pandemic, many makerspaces were closing up as margins were thin, real estate prices were going through the roof, and communities shrank. Those that survived are operating with uncertain futures and others are expected to close unless a miracle happens.

Places like American Steel in West Oakland were incredible. I miss going there on tours, walking around, seeing all the murals, and peeking into the yards and observing all burning man sculptures. Institutions like these fueled my curiosity, encouraged me to explore neighborhoods and were some of the early inspirations for my photography career.

In an effort to get the word out on some of these incredible spaces, I put together a list of makerspaces across the Bay Area. Please support your local makerspace and get the word out. People are always complaining about lack of third spaces, difficulty meeting people, so here is your chance.

Sure, some folks want to zip up asap but others who need to stretch their legs, wait out a storm or have hangry people riding with them, here are some great options for quick bites, places to strech legs, or casual spots for dining or a brew.

How Far Is The Drive From San Francisco To Lake Tahoe

This depends on where in San Francisco you start (can take 30 minutes just to get across town, traffic (can add anywhere from 1-2+ hours of driving time), stops and more). It also depends on where in Tahoe you are going i.e. South Lake, King’s Beach, Truckee etc (that can add an extra 30-60 minutes). Drive times can range from 3 hours to 6 hours (sometimes more depending on snow conditions, holiday travel and more). Some people get a little anxious driving along the narrow mountains to South Lake Tahoe while others get nervous around speeders on the North route.

Public Transit San Francisco Bay Area To Lake Tahoe

The best bet to get to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area is to take Amtrak train. It’s a great option if you hate driving in snow or are going solo and dont’ want to drive the entire length on your own.

Most people come to Tahoe and either don’t plan well, are not aware of what’s going on, or spend all their time in their cabins, restaurants or slopes but there is a lot more to do, see and experience in the area. How To Ride Presidio Go Shuttle

You wait for the bus at dedicated stops. Be sure to look out for signage on the side of the street where you get picked up at. The most confusing pick-up is on Van Ness street (center island), not the street. Give yourself time as most people don’t take the shuttle and will be useless in helping you out.

Presidio Go Hours Of Operation

Downtown Route: comes mostly every 30 minutes, a few times every 45 minutes

• To Downtown Weekday: 6:10AM-7:55PM; Weekend: 9:30AM-6:55PM

• To Presidio Weekday: 5:45AM-7:25PM; Weekend: 9AM-6:25PM

South Hills Route: arrives every 30 minutes

• Weekday: 6:30AM-7:25AM

• Weekend: 11AM-6:25PM

Is Presidio Go Shuttle Free? Is It Open To The Public?

The Presidio Go Shuttle is free and it’s open to the public with the exception of certain times (commute hours) in the morning and afternoon (see schedule) for the downtown Route (marked in green with astericks).

That said, only certain stops are for pick up or drop-off. The Presidio Go is designed for people to leave or enter the Presidio i.e. you can’t get dropped off on Van Ness if going toward the park and you can’t get picke up on Van Ness if heading downtown.

Best Views, Hikes From Presidio Go Shuttle Stops?

Some stops are only for one direction so note which ones you need to get off on or ask your driver.

• Inspiration Point: accessible view, from there can hike down to Inn at the Presidio and then walk over to Main Lawn and continue to Tunnel Tops. Could also hike to top of Andy Goldsworth Woodline or to top of Lyon Street Steps for views.

• Visitor Center: Short walk to Tunnel Tops, from there can walk along Crissy Field to Fort Point or you can exit early and walk up to Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point South. There is also the Walt Disney Center across the Main Lawn. Behind the Golf Course is Andy Goldsworthy Spire sculpture.

• Coastal Trail or Rob Hill Campground: Immigrant Point Overlook and then walk to Batteries to Bluff Trail which can take you all the way to Golden Gate Bridge. I would use Google Map Street view as the hike can be shorter than the route posted through walking directions.

• Baker Beach: Baker Beach is here.

• 25th Avenue: People usually will walk several blocks and then start the Land’s End hike (can be 1-1.6 miles each way depending on how far you hike, 1.6 miles to labyrinth).

• Tides Coverage/Letterman Building: Yoda Fountain, Skywalker Ranch General Store, views of the Palace of Fine Arts from across the street, or you can walk there and make your way to the Wave Organ or Dynamo Donut stand. You can also go the opposite direction and walk up to Andy Goldsworthy Woodline.

• Lombard Gate: can walk up the Lyon Street steps (great views from Pacific Heights) or you can go up to the Woodline, cross the street and take Lyon Street Stairs down.

• Davis/California:

  • California Street Cable Cars

  • Walk the Embarcadero, go toward Ferry Building, Bay Bridge or opposite direction to Pier 39/Fishermans Wharf along the water.

• St Anthony’s, Tenderloin: new & gently-used clothing

  • Mon-Sat, 10-4pm except 11/27-29 and 12/25-27

• Community Thrift, Mission District: Clean, gently used adult & childrens’ clothing & shoes. Sales from donations go to local charities i.e. Women’s Building, Homeless Prenatal Program

  • 7 days a week, 10-5pm except holidays

• North Beach Citizens: All clothes but especially: men’s casual pants, jeans, and sweatpants, sneakers, comfortable shoes & warm outerwear
